Jessie Stead, Ambient Lines
May 27 - July 8, 2012
Opening reception: Sunday, May 27 (with cake)
6:00 - 8:00pm

Soloway presents Ambient Lines by Jessie Stead, an installation executed in collaboration with Stead's "mood lighting group" AMBIENTS.

Staging its debut back in the summer of 2011, AMBIENTS uses collections of miscellaneous consumer lighting, sound and projection equipment to alter the default illuminations of a given space or event. The group asserts a playfully aggressive trademark style insistent on its decided presence and circumstance, replacing status-quo notions of mood lighting as subliminal, politely atmospheric ambiance with the meta-literal, foregrounded, self-assuredness of AMBIENTS.

The installation additionally offers AMBIENTS in the form of projectiles, furniture, music, rubbers, assorted poisons, walls, styluses and video art in the hopes of aggrandizing its imagined milieu.

Jessie Stead lives and works. She experiments with re-mixable and overlapping patterns of cross-disciplined media, free-form internal logic, poetics of digital and material subjection, production and distribution parodies, etc. Often posing as a film director in an on-going IRL performance work, Stead's single channel motion-pictures have been featured internationally at film festivals and museum engagements such as the Greater New York Cinema exhibition at MoMA PS1 and the London Film Festival. Installations, music, ephemera, and events orchestrated by Stead such as the "A Drive-In" projection party series and her performance collaborative HARIBO have been presented at mixed New York venues and other places, recently including Performa 11, Fitzroy Gallery, and Real Fine Arts.
